The European commission is planning to create a newly revised version of the INSPIRE Technical Guidelines on Metadata for the end of 2015. To prepare this, a group of international experts from countries across the European Union was formed, in which Kristian Senkler, metadata expert from con terra GmbH, was appointed.
Due to the outstanding importance of metadata describing available spatial data and services, the first INSPIRE implementing rule providing for metadata came into force in late 2008. It aims to provide information on the spatial data sets and spatial data services as well as its availability in a uniform and comprehensible manner across borders. Since then, the information gained across EU countries regarding practical experience in the creation and maintenance of INSPIRE metadata, means there is a need to revise the Technical Guidelines. At this point, the expert panel support another important step towards a practical, uniformly designed, European Spatial Data Infrastructure with the revised version of the Technical Guidelines.
