WEkEO provides harmonized access to Copernicus data

con terra implements service infrastructure components

We know Earth Observation", WEkEO for short, is the name of the upcoming web platform presented by EUMETSAT, the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Mercator Ocean on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the EU environmental monitoring programme Copernicus on 20 and 21 June in Baveno, Italy. As part of the European Commission's DIAS infrastructure, which provides harmonized access to all Copernicus data and information, processing resources, tools and other relevant data, WEkEO provides easy and free access to Copernicus data. These include data from the Sentinel satellites, contributing missions and Copernicus marine, land, atmospheric and climate services. At present, the system is only accessible to a reduced user group, but will be opened up to a wide range of users in the next expansion phases.

The three central organisations EUMETSAT, ECMWF and Mercator Ocean rely on the European IT industry and the latest available technology for the implementation of WEkEO. In this context, con terra GmbH, together with 52°North GmbH as part of a larger consortium led by CGI Germany, played a decisive role in the development of the prototype of the underlying service infrastructure. The companies were able to contribute their expertise in the areas of harmonized and interoperable data access and metadata management of Earth observation data to the project in an ideal manner.
